Damn You, Bradford!

So, it turns out that the tree that split in half in our yard is a Bradford Pear Tree, which has a bit of a reputation for splitting in half. Apparently there's a flaw in the wood, or in the branches, and eventually the weight of the top of the tree is too much, and it all splits off.

Huh. They don't tell you that when you're shopping for a house!

On the bright side, they'll be taking the whole tree down today (including the intact half), and we'll get a chance to plant a replacement in a couple of months, about the time out baby is due. Having a tree planted in conjunction with our new kid seems like a neat idea.

Of course my parents did something similar with my brother, and it got kind of forgotten, but they also planted it way back in a hidden corner of our yard. This will be the main thing in the front of the house. Hope we don't pick an ugly tree :)
