It's all been done before.

Went to the Barenaked Ladies Concert for my birthday last night. As a sign of how old and musically dead I'm getting, my last three concerts are:

  1. Barenaked Ladies last night

  2. Weird Al Yankovic a year or 2 ago on his Poodle Hat tour

  3. Barenaked Ladies with Alanis Morrisette 2 summers ago

Don't get me wrong, all the concerts were good (well, except for Alanis. She's lost her angst, so now wanders aimlessly on the stage singing the songs we all know out of a sense of duty).

Anyway, the opening act was not bad, I forget his name, but now that I search the internet, I think it was Mike Doughty from Soul Coughing, which is kind of funny because at the concert, I was like "boy, this guy sounds just like Soul Coughing". I was even singing "Walk Around in Circles" over some of his songs.

It also explains why it's the Mike Doughty Band, and the rest of the band barely existed as far as he was concerned.

Also funny was that there were two giant TV screens that showed video of the band, but they were shot from so far away that the image on the video screens was smaller than the actual band. Since the screens were next to the stage, that means they didn't add mich.

Then the Ladies came on. I was a little worried because this new album kind of..sucks.. but I think they realized that. They always put on a good show, and last night was no exception. They played all of the old songs they had to play (and some strange ones), and only about 4 or 5 ones off of the new album. And a couple of those sounded a lot better live, so maybe I'll give them more of a chance now.

Overall, they're a very entertaining group to see live. They know how to work an audience, and you don't need to know all of their songs to enjoy their concert.
